Sleep Apnea TreatmentWhen it comes to self-improvement, we’ve learned that conservative approaches work best for most people. For example, extreme diets usually fail within the first week of use because people are unwilling to adapt to a diet that forces them to change their lifestyle so drastically. That being said, we believe the same concept works for dental treatment. This is why we offer a conservative approach to sleep apnea treatment with our oral appliances.

At Parkway Dental Care, Dr. Philip is committed to improving the quality of life for patients with sleep apnea. Because this sleep disorder interrupts a person’s breathing many times during sleep, it can lead to daytime drowsiness, depression and even stroke or heart failure. While CPAP is a very common sleep apnea treatment, Dr. Philip knows that this treatment requires a dramatic change in your sleeping routine and that many patients will have trouble adjusting to it. Therefore, he believes oral appliance therapy is ultimately more efficient than CPAP machines.

What is CPAP?

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This machine requires wearing a mask that provides the patient with airflow to prevent the interruption of breathing during sleep.

While this machine has been proven to improve the quality of life for sleep apnea patients, only a small percentage of patients actually use the machine properly.  Up to 83 percent of patients who use the CPAP report not adhering to the treatment. Studies show that using the machine for at least 4 hours every night will result in improvement in daytime sleepiness, blood pressure and other risks of sleep apnea. However, the majority of patients using CPAP report wearing the mask only 3 hours per night and even skipping whole nights altogether. Unfortunately, this is not enough time to reverse the dire effects of sleep apnea.

Many patients state that the machine is uncomfortable and awkward to sleep with. Bringing a bulky machine into the bedroom is also a downfall of this form of sleep apnea treatment.

Sleep Apnea Oral Appliances at Parkway Dental Care

At Parkway Dental Care, we provide sleep apnea patients with the conservative oral appliance therapy. This treatment entails inserting a small, plastic device into the mouth during sleep. Not only is this device comfortable, it also is extremely effective in preventing the interruption of breathing. The device works by preventing the tongue, throat and mouth muscles from relaxing and blocking the airway.
