At Parkway Dental Care, we offer porcelain veneers in Kissimmee, FL. This procedure hides various flaws to provide a beautiful, natural looking smile. While the wealth of information about porcelain veneers on the Internet focuses on the end result- the permanent veneers- less is known about how to care for your temporary veneers. Our dentists at Parkway Dental Care are committed to providing excellent care throughout the entire veneers process, that’s why we’ve taken the time to help you understand more about your temporary veneers.
Process of Porcelain Veneers
The process of receiving porcelain veneers is often a two-visit procedure. The first visit requires removing some of the tooth’s structure. While this sounds painful, it’s actually a surprisingly painless process. Some patients do get nervous (we admit our tools don’t exactly sound comforting) and we can offer anesthetics to calm them during this part.
Once enough enamel has been removed so that the veneers will fit without a bulky look or feel, we take an impression of your reshaped teeth. Your veneers will eventually be designed based on these impressions for a very natural look. We send the impressions to the lab and they usually create and send back the permanent veneers within 2 to 3 weeks.
However…we can’t just let you walk out of our office with your reshaped teeth. That would be dangerous for your oral health. We need something to protect your teeth while waiting for your porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers are placed over your teeth to protect your tooth and restore your appearance. Yes, patients usually only wear the temporary veneers for 2 to 3 weeks but caring for them is vital! So, how do you care for your temporary veneers?
Caring for Temporary Veneers
The main thing to remember is that your temporary veneers are just that…temporary. They were not made to last a long time or to undergo a lot of pressure. So, when brushing brush very lightly and with a soft bristle toothbrush. Also, we suggest rinsing the mouth with saltwater to help clean out hard to reach areas (strong mouthrinses may agitate tender gums).
As far as eating, do NOT eat hard foods. This will be uncomfortable and may cause the temporary veneers to crack or dislodge. Eat soft foods and stick to liquids as much as possible. Also, your temporary veneers are even more susceptible to staining than your natural teeth, avoid dark foods like berries, coffee, wine or soda.
