In today’s world, dentists are able to offer complex and involved procedures that aim to completely revamp a patient’s mouth. While these procedures have the ability to restore and improve your appearance, sometimes they require weakening the natural tooth. At Parkway Dental Care, we prefer conserving the natural tooth as much as possible. That’s why we offer porcelain onlays as an alternative to dental crowns.
Why Conserve the Natural Tooth?
When a natural tooth is damaged or decayed, the best possible solution is to correct the problem (i.e. remove the decay) without compromising the natural structure of the tooth. When you keep the natural tooth intact this preserves its strength. Additionally, aggressive restorations don’t last forever. This means that they will eventually need to be replaced. However, if the tooth has already been compromised, it may not be able to withstand a second procedure. This could ultimately lead to extraction and the patient may then be forced to undergo more intense and expensive treatments such as bridgework or dental implants. At Parkway Dental Care, our dentists always recommend more conservative dental procedures. That’s why, if possible, we recommend restoring a tooth with porcelain onlays instead of a crown.
Onlays vs. Crowns
An onlay is a fabricated piece of porcelain that is designed and shaped to fit over a damaged section of the tooth. Because an onlay only rests over a small section of the tooth, it helps to strengthen it instead of compromising the natural tooth. Onlays last just as long as dental crowns and look exactly like a natural tooth.
Crowns are hollowed out “caps” that fit over the natural tooth. The natural tooth is compromised with dental crowns because it must be shaved down on all sides to allow room for the crown. This weakens the natural tooth and increases the chance of extraction or other expensive dental work in the future when the crown needs to be replaced.
